You love reading blog posts, you have heard and read a lot about bloggers and blogging, you want to join the crusade but there is something that always pulls you back. May be it’s the inertia or lack of good writing skills. So if you are like me who have been thinking about writing a post but could never get one posted, here are some valuable tips for you that can help you get started and become a good blogger.
1. Stop thinking and start writing:
The best thing about blogging is it is free from the strict scrutiny of an editor. So you can be free and casual in your writing and can write on any topic under the sun, which you feel strongly about. So stop pondering too much about writing skills or your lack of it. Simply start writing. Creative writing is nothing but spontaneous writing. As you start writing, words would automatically start flowing and your writing would automatically start refining itself.
This however, does not mean that you can blow away the rules of language and write without caring about spelling, grammar and punctuation. By casual writing, I mean you can be free in your style, voice and idea.
You can write either in your own conversational style or develop a style and tone appropriate to your subject material.
2. Know your subject:
It is always a good idea to write about something you feel strongly about or have good knowledge about. It not only gives you confidence but also makes your write up read natural and interesting. If you do not know your topic, you will only sound dumb. And if you write on something which does not interest you, you will sound boring and dull.
3. Research well:
To write about something means you are the master of that particular thing. So even if you know your topic, you must research it well before you set out to write about it. Research it like crazy until you truly become a master of the subject of your interest. This will add credibility to your writing and would draw more readers to your post.
4. Write a catchy title:
It is your title that people would read first. In fact it is through your title only that people would judge your article or blog posting. So make all possible effort to make it captivating and interesting. A crispy and apt title would not only help you get noticed but would also fetch you regular readers for your blog postings. Your title must be descriptive of your post.
5. Keep it short and crisp:
Keep your post short and to the point. Many times in an attempt to write more, writers lose focus; this makes their writing not only dull and lengthy but makes it lose its credibility as well. Moreover, no one has time to read a blog post that seems like a PHD research paper.
6. Connect with your reader:
True, blogging is free writing that lends expression to the subject you are most passionate about. But along with that, never forget that every blog has an audience. So like it’s important to know your subject, it is equally important to know your audience. Target your readers and customize your write up as per the taste and interest of your audience. You can do this by modulating the tone, vocabulary and style of writing to suit the interest and knowledge level of your readers.
The golden rule for any kind of blog entry or audience is to write in an interactive way. Involve the reader in the write up. This can be done by asking interesting questions, making lists, stating paradoxes or contradictions, or just being plain passionate about what you are writing and for who you are writing.
Proofread your writing twice before submitting your write up for publication. Sometimes reading your writing aloud helps you catch errors your eyes might have missed. Look out for areas where mistakes are most commonly made such as words that share the same spelling or pronunciation, but have different meanings, like accept and except. Another frequently made error is to mix contractions with apostrophes, like their and they’re, its and it’s, your and you’re and so on.
You’ll be amazed at the number of errors, when you proofread or get someone else proofread your writing. Also while proofreading, do not neglect the punctuation. Pay attention to capitalized words, missing or extra commas, periods used incorrectly and so on.
8. Invite and respond to comments:
Last but not the least, for every blog entry to win over the readers requires proper participation on behalf of the readers in the subject matter. So invite comments by encouraging readers to place their viewpoint. However, inviting and receiving comments is not the end of the story, you need to respond to these comments as well to establish your credibility and become a successful blogger.
Comments, debates and discussion threads will not only help you in improvising your blog as per your target audience but will also help you grow as a writer.
While these tips are not exhaustive, these will certainly help you get started with your first blog post and as you continue your journey as a blogger you will be equipped with enough information to tip other bloggers on writing skills!!
And finally as Lao Tzu has said, “a journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step”. So take the plunge, let your creativity sour high and you never know where you will reach.
